When most people think about aristocratic lineage, they think about privilege. Historians know it served a different purpose.

Generative AI can reproduce our voices, faces, mannerisms, knowledge, and communication styles independently of us. For the first time in history, personality itself has become portable.

Existing identity systems answer an important question: Who is this?

But they struggle to answer a new one: Who retains continuing authority over the recognizable personality AI can reproduce?

That question echoes the purpose lineage once served. Not to establish identity alone, but to preserve continuity of authority as people aged, delegated responsibility, died, and were succeeded by others. Today's debates often focus on privacy, copyright, or biometrics. Each addresses part of the problem.

The deeper challenge is governance.

As AI becomes capable of representing us, acting for us, and learning from us, society will need modern equivalents of lineage, not to preserve aristocratic privilege, but to preserve the continuing relationship between human beings and the personalities through which they are recognized.

The future will not need books of noble families. It may need something more universal. A trusted record of authority connecting every person to the recognizable characteristics AI can reproduce. Perhaps, in the age of artificial intelligence, lineage is becoming digital.
